Simple Summer Wellness Tips for Healthy Senior Living

Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors,  but it also brings unique health considerations for older adults. At Companion Services of America, we believe that a safe, healthy summer starts with awareness and a few simple habits that make a big difference.

Stay Hydrated

As we age, our sense of thirst naturally decreases. This means dehydration can sneak up quickly. Encourage drinking water throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty. Fresh fruit, herbal teas, and water‑rich foods like cucumbers and melon can also help maintain hydration.

Protect Against Heat

Seniors are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Light clothing, wide brimmed hats, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can help keep body temperature regulated. When in doubt, choose shade or air conditioned spaces.

Keep Medications Summer Safe

Some medications increase sensitivity to sunlight or heat. A quick review with a pharmacist or physician can help identify any risks. Also, avoid leaving medications in hot cars or direct sunlight, as heat can reduce their effectiveness.

Move Safely

Summer is a wonderful time for gentle movement, morning walks, stretching, gardening, or chair exercises. Staying active supports balance, mood, and overall wellness. Just remember to pace activities and take breaks to avoid overheating.

Eat Seasonal & Fresh

Summer produce is packed with vitamins and hydration. Berries, tomatoes, leafy greens, and peaches are delicious ways to support immune health and energy levels.

Stay Connected

Social engagement is a key part of wellness. Whether it’s a family barbecue, a community event, or a simple chat on the porch, staying connected boosts emotional well‑being and reduces feelings of isolation.

At Companion Services of America, we’re committed to helping seniors enjoy a safe, vibrant, and healthy summer. With the right support and a few mindful habits, this season can be full of joy and comfort.
