July is National Park and Recreation Month

Senior Care in Buffalo Grove IL

Summer is here, which means it is a great time for you and your senior loved one to do some activities outdoors. Just in time for the great weather, July is observed as National Park and Recreation Month, a month to celebrate the beautiful parks all across the country. During the month of July, why not plan to visit a park or two with your senior loved one? Parks can be a great place to relax, exercise, have fun, and even learn more about our natural world. Here are just a few of the fun things you and your senior loved one can do this July at a park near you.

  • Hike a Nature Trail

Many parks have nature trails that are great for hiking and enjoying the sights. Hiking is a great way to get in some light and low-impact exercise which is great for your senior loved one’s health (and yours). It is also a great way to see and appreciate wildlife and plant life. Some nature trails even have posted signs along the way to inform you about what you may see as you walk. As you and your loved one will discover, hiking can be a relaxing, fun, and educational experience.

  • Bring the Kids

Parks are a great place for seniors to spend the day with grandchildren. Children will love playing on the playground or exploring a nature center and your loved one will get a great opportunity to have fun and spend quality time with them.

  • Have a Picnic

Many parks have outdoor picnic areas that can be fun places to eat on a nice day.  Pack a lunch with your senior loved one and head to the park. When you are done, take some time to explore the park and take a walk around. Eating lunch out at the park will be a nice way to add variety to yours and your loved one’s daily routine.

  • Cycle Through the Park

If a park nearby has biking trails, invite your senior loved one to come along for a scenic bike ride. These trails are often smooth and pleasant to ride on and you won’t have to worry about car traffic!  In addition, biking around a park is a great way to explore it, observe nature, and get a great workout in!
