Rediscovering the Joy of Painting for Pleasure

Home Care in Des Plaines IL

Do you remember being in elementary school and going to art class? The excitement you had when the art teacher would give everyone a new project to work on. At the end of the project, you knew the best creations would be hung in the school hallway for everyone to see. Nearly everyone loved the art class projects. But as people grew older and their schedules became more demanding, the time they could spend creating for the simple pleasure of creating diminished until no value could be seen in creating something if there wasn’t a financial reward at the end of the project.

One of the perks of getting older is that seniors can renew their interest in hobbies they had to set aside in favor of earning money and caring for a family. These projects have the added benefit of giving them an emotional boost. There are lots of great projects they can do at home. Painting is one of them.

Painting is a popular pastime that doesn’t have to cost a lot of money when you’re a hobbyist. It’s something you can do with your loved one. It’s also something their home care provider can do with them. There are three main types of painting they can do. Watercolors, acrylic, or oil. The type of paint purchased depends on the type of painting the want to do. The differences between these three types is the type of binder used to carry the pigments. Binders can be either natural or synthetic.

Watercolors

Pigments are mixed with gum Arabic, tree sap taken from an acacia tree. Water colors are water soluble

Acrylic

Synthetic resin is used to bind the pigments. Acrylic paint dries faster than oil and is water soluble.

Oil

Pigments are mixed with linseed oil, a natural binder.

After you buy the paint, you’ll need paint brushes and a canvas. Inexpensive paint brushes can be found in most big box retail stores around the country. Many paint brush sets also come with paint. Be sure to keep an eye on the type of paint packaged with the paint brushes. Canvases can also be purchased at most big box retail stores around the country.

Creating something from nothing is a great way to spend a few hours. Not only does this pastime give your loved one something fun to do, but it also gives them the added pleasure of being able to display what they create on a wall for families and friends to see.
