3 Interesting Outdoor Activities to Do with Home Care that Don’t Require Transportation

Home Care in Wilmette IL

Giving up the right to drive may be something that aging seniors worry about more than anything else as they get older and begin to lose their physical strength or other capabilities. No one really wants to think about the prospect of losing their driver’s license, especially if they’ve been able to drive and take care of themselves for decades.

When elderly individuals realize they are no longer safe behind the wheel, it’s best to voluntarily give up the right to drive; however, it could be forcibly done if the DMV, police, or someone else deems them to be a risk to themselves and others. When relying on home care, they could still get around if that particular caregiver or agency provides transportation services.  Even if they don’t, there are commonly used services in most communities across the United States that provide transportation to seniors, free of charge.

June is Great Outdoors Month and seniors living at home relying on some type of home care can actually still get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather, even if they don’t have transportation. Below are three activities they can consider doing with the home care aide.

1. Gardening. Even if elderly clients haven’t yet started a garden or don’t seem to have a lot of space, they can still plant some vegetables and get them growing and ripe by August. Gardening is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the beautiful weather and fresh air.

2. Going for a walk around the block. If there are sidewalks along the roadway or plenty of open space, they can get outside with the caregiver and go for a brisk walk. Not only will they be getting exercise, but it can also provide emotional benefits as they get outside and change the scenery for themselves.

3. Playing lawn games. There are plenty of games people love to play indoors and outside. Some of these are considered lawn games – croquet, bocce, badminton, and more can all be a great deal of fun.  The home care aide may be able to provide that physical support that gets them doing these activities and enjoying the emotional benefits of them.
